Overview
The Section of Nephrology at the University of Manitoba is a dedicated team of 34 academic faculty members and over 700 interdisciplinary personnel committed to delivering exceptional patient-centered care, conducting cutting-edge research, and providing comprehensive education in kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation. Aligned with the Department of Medicine and Transplant Manitoba, the section manages a significant caseload across its three main sites of operation: Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital, and Seven Oaks Hospital.
Clinical Service
Clinical activities and research efforts are conducted at Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital, and Seven Oaks Hospital campuses, with services extending to remote areas in Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut.
Education
The section offers a nephrology residency program providing hands-on training in various aspects of nephrology care. Additionally, opportunities exist for collaboration and learning through research initiatives and educational programs.
Research
The section fosters a productive and collaborative research environment, focusing on translational, clinical, epidemiologic, health economic, and implementation science in native and transplant kidney disease. Research clusters at Health Sciences Centre and Chronic Disease Innovation Centre lead studies in renal transplant and systems biology. An emerging focus is research in Continuous Quality Improvement.
Administration
With a large team comprising academic faculty, administrative, clinical, and research personnel, the section ensures comprehensive care delivery, managing a large number of patients with chronic kidney disease, dialysis patients, and patients with kidney transplants. It also operates general nephrology clinics and provides on-site nephrology consultation across main hospital sites and telehealth support to hospitals province-wide.
