Overview
The Critical Care Medicine section brings together intensivists from Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Surgery. It delivers critical care services for adults in Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and Nunavut.
Clinical Service
ICUs span five units across two tertiary hospitals: Health Sciences Centre (Medical ICU, Surgical/Trauma ICU, and Intermediate ICU) and St. Boniface Hospital (Medical-Surgical ICU and Cardiovascular Surgery ICU). Grace General Hospital also hosts an acute community Medical-Surgical ICU.
Education
Educational opportunities are available for medical students and residents from multiple departments and stages of training, with clinical-trial, epidemiological, and laboratory research opportunities.
Research
The section is actively involved in education, research, and outcomes improvement, supported by an advanced database.
Administration
More than 40 intensivists deliver care across multiple sites, with capabilities including invasive mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, and ECMO. More than 5,000 patients are admitted across the units annually.
